ESPN's SportsNation annual poll of sports fans ranking their favorite professional teams.
The Predators are #8 overall (out of 122 professional franchises) and the 3rd highest NHL team. Titans are #62 overall and the 15th highest NFL team.

#8 overall? That's a highly suspicious determination. That's an invalid poll regardless. It doesn't sample the population as a whole, this poll only samples those who are on the internet and on that particular webpage at the time the poll is offered, and those who responded that had the interest to respond. One could also respond more than once, I'm sure; it wouldn't be that difficult to clear your history and cookies, and I guarantee it was done by those respondents who wanted to see "their team" at the apex of the poll.
That's useless information. Don't believe the rankings.

That is not how this survey was conducted. I took part in a similar survey a few years ago. They send you an e-mail invitation and you log on to their website and enter your demographic information. They ask you what your favorite team is, then you are presented with the questions.
It's not like, "Hey Mr. Red Wings fan, what do you think of the Predators?" And it's not the little polls in the corner of the web page that you are thinking of. This is a professional-style marketing survey.
It's a survey of fan feelings which can't be measured by any other way than directly asking the fans to quantify their feelings on a scale of 1-to-10. It is absolutely a valid survey.

I doubt it.

I once participated in a similar survey. It still only polls those people who are registered with ESPN and actually care to respond.
It's not a valid survey.

If you are going to invalidate any poll that gives the respondent a option to refuse, then you are going to invalidate every poll in the history of polling. No survey is mandatory.
It's a survey not a final tally of every sport fan. It doesn't matter that the respondents are exclusively ESPN web site users. 80,000 people is quite a sample pool.

that is quite small in overall fan #s though
i know it is a sample and a survey, but i am sure it could have been thrown off by having 20000 preds fans included in the 80k
