"Maryland officially became the first state on Tuesday to approve a plan to give its electoral votes for president to the winner of the national popular vote instead of the candidate chosen by state voters."

So now we'll let California decide who wins?

The electoral college is an effective way to let the smaller populated states have a say in the federal executive branch. The USA is a republic not a democracy. Democracy exists on the state and local levels. Maryland is actually saying, "We don't care what the people of our state say, we're going to vote another way."

Although the members of the electoral college are free to vote for anyone any way. Some states split their votes, but most put all their electoral votes toward one candidate.

I have to underestimate everyone here because everyone is constantly meeting low expectations.
