Eddie George: Hall of Fame argument

Post by wolfe »

In one of George's latest comments he says, "I have a shot at the Hall of Fame. " [reference]
Does anyone see him as a hall of fame player? I mean, I see a very good player. But Hall of Fame material?

I've spent the last couple of hours digging up stats for some notable Hall of Famers of the Modern Era (last 30 years or so) and some current RB leaders. Below are comparisons of everyone's first eight years since Eddie has only played eight years.

Code: Select all

Sorted by Total Yards
games att yards tds yds/game yds/att
Eric Dickerson+ 116 2616 11903 86 102.6 4.55
Barry Sanders+ 121 2384 11725 84 96.9 4.92
Emmit Smith* 124 2595 11234 112 90.6 4.33
Jim Brown+ 104 2070 10768 89 103.5 5.20
Curtis Martin* 124 2604 10361 71 83.6 3.98
Walter Payton+ 114 2352 10204 72 89.5 4.34
Eddie George* 128 2733 10009 64 78.2 3.66
Jerome Bettis* 125 2461 9804 48 78.4 3.98
O.J. Simpson+ 105 1997 9626 57 91.7 4.82
Tony Dorsett+ 116 2136 9525 59 82.1 4.46
Marshall Faulk* 121 2155 9442 79 78.0 4.38
Earl Campbell+ 115 2187 9407 74 81.8 4.30
Franco Harris+ 111 2012 8563 78 77.1 4.26
Marcus Allen+ 105 1781 7275 63 69.3 4.08
John Riggins+ 95 1406 5669 33 59.7 4.03

+= HOF; *=active
His numbers look pretty good stacked up against this group (except his 3.66 yds/att). If he can play for a few more years - which is certainly possible - then he might have a slight chance at the Hall.

Some of the people on this list didn't do anything after their first eight years. Dickerson & Dorsett had huge decreases in production after eight season. Others such as Smith, Payton, Sanders, & Brown were still producing 1,000 yard seasons after the eight year mark. And some - Allen & Riggins - just were able to hang around long enough to build up huge numbers (and championships).

Is Eddie Hall of Fame worthy?

He will be in; he might not be a first ballot choice, but I heard a stat this weekend...11,000 yards and you're in. So 999 more and it would seem to be a lock for him.
You better get on your knees and pray...Sheffield and Gainesboro are on the way.

11,000 yards = a lock. I don't buy that.

I think the same argument will be had for Eddie, Curtis Martin and Jerome Bettis. There will be plenty of arguments about their lack of championships.
Emmitt & Marshall ARE A LOCK. Thurman Thomas (12,074) is the only 11,000+ yard retired player not in the hall of fame - and he should get there in 2006 when eligible.
The rules are fair. The regulations are fair.

it is too easy for high profile players( rb's, qb's) to get into the hall, if marcus allen is in with his stats, i know he has a super bowl mvp(i think) still eddie hasnt missed a start thats impressive! i am not sure he is worthy, but he will make it with those stats.
it's time to reclaim what is rightfully mine.

So don't buy it; I do. With his durability, never missing a start, he will get inat some point.

I hope his durability is taken into consideration. Only he and Jim Brown racked up that many yards without missing a game.
